Mr. Ritter was trained in architecture in a brother's office, and at the age of twenty-five established an office in Williamsport. Independently he designed the City Hall, a Bank, High School and three Junior High buildings in Huntington, W. Va., Vocational High School, Chester, Pa., and other public and business buildings in various locations.
In Philadelphia Mr. Ritter formed a partnership with Howell L. Shay (Ritter & Shay), established an office in the Packard Building, and in the ensuing years acquired a large practice. One of their important works was the new U. S. Custom House and Appraisers Stores (1936) an outstanding achievement. Other Philadelphia buildings designed by the firm include the Packard Office Building; Office Building #1500 Walnut Street; Independence Indemnity Building; Market Street National Bank, and the Drake Apartment Hotel. Ritter & Shay also were architects of the Masonic Temple at Chester, Pa., the American Hotel in Allentown, the Bethlehem (Pa.) Hotel, Lincoln High School and other buildings in that city.
