Graduated in composition from the Vilnius Conservatory.
Started playing piano at the age of 4. Member of the USSR Union of Composers. Has written a number of scores for cinema, television and radio.
First appeared with his own jazz band in 1961. Worked with several other jazz bands. Later founded his first trio.
His first major success came in October 1970 at the Gorky Jazz Festival, where he played his own work, Opus a Due, with the drummer Vladimir Tarasov. The Ganelin Trio was invited to Britain in 1984 by the Arts Council as part of its £200,000 Contemporary Music Network scheme. Records by the Ganelin Trio were issued in London in 1980 on Leo, an independent record label.
Attracted the attention of Western musicians, music-lovers and the press. Melodia, the official Soviet record company, issued 3 Ganelin albums. Recently recognized by the Soviet cultural authorities.
Goskontsert (the State concert organization) has started to send Ganelin and his musicians abroad regularly.
