Chesnut attended high school in Oakland, college at the University of California, the University of Chicago and George Washington University. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California in 1890.
Chesnut began his career as an assistant botanist at the Bureau of Plant Industry of the United States Department of Agriculture in 1894. Ten years later he was appointed a professor of chemistry and geology at Montana Agricultural College.
Then in 1907, Victor took a position of an assistant chemist of drugs division at the United States Department of Agriculture. Also in 1916, he served as an assistant chemist of Phytochemical Laboratory at the same department. Chesnut worked as an associate chemist at the United States Department of Agriculture from 1924 to until his retirement in 1933.
On July 18, 1899 Victor Chesnut married Olive Branch Spohr. They have 4 children.
