Coleman was the first editor at Coach House Books from 1966 until 1975. After his tenure in publishing, he managed the multidisciplinary art centre, A Space in Toronto for four years. He has also taught film studies at Queen's University and creative writing at York University.
In 1963 Victor married Elizabeth Toon, but they broke up in 1967. Then he married Sarah Miller in 1968, but they also broke up in 1972. Finally, he married Jan-Marie Cooke in 1970. He has two daughters and one son from his first marriage, one daughter from the second one and one daughter from the third one.
