Served with Canadian Navy, 1942-1945.

Career

Music director, conductor, Winnipeg Symphony, 1958-1968; conductor-in-residence, U. Toronto, since 1969; resident conductor, Toronto Symphony, from 1970; conductor, Canadian Opera Company, from 1967; regular appearances in, Japan, Brussels, Rome and Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics, since 1979; music director, Hamilton Philharmonic, since 1990. Annual conducting for British Broadcasting Corporation, in England. Regular guest conductor throughout Canada with National Youth Orchestra of Canada, since 1960.

Founder, conductor Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. Visiting professor art and music Tokyo U., 1979-1987, professor.emeritus, since 1987.
