He received his Doctor of Philosophy in physics and mathematics (specialisation in acoustics) from the Moscow State University in 1981. In 1989 he received his Doctor of Science in the same disciplines from the Moscow State University and the Higher Attestation Commission of the former Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics.
He is professor of acoustics and vibration at Loughborough University. He then pursued an academic career in various universities leading to his present position at Loughborough University.
