After the October Revolution 1917, emigrated with his parents. Later described in his memoirs how his mother had bought a train for the family to escape. Received a private education in Paris.
Freelance journalist in the 1930s. Proof-reader of French and Russian texts for publishers. In 1940, subeditor, then editor with the BBC’s European Service.
Bridge correspondent for the Evening Standard in the 1970s. and for the Mail on Sunday from 1982. Prolific writer on bridge (25 books). Became an internationally known bridge player.
