Victor P. Petrov

Background

Victor Petrov was born on March 22, 1907, in Harbin, China.

Career

Petrov was a professor of languages, history, and geography at the United States Naval Language School in Washington, D.C., from 1946 to 1963. He authored over thirty books, many of which were focused on Russia and East Asia. His most comprehensive work was Geography of the Soviet Union, a seven-volume collection published between 1959 and 1967. Two other books he wrote in English were his 1967 China: Emerging World Power and his 1970 Mongolia: A Profile. His later works include his 1993 Po Mirovym Prostoram (In the Wide World) and his 1994 Izgoy (Expatriate).

Achievements

• In 1981 the Congress of Russian Americans gave Petrov the Meritorious Award. In 1995 he was an inductee into that organization’s Hall of Fame.
