(Excerpt from The Nautilus, Vol. 25: The Cardinal Teeth of...)
Excerpt from The Nautilus, Vol. 25: The Cardinal Teeth of Pisidium; May, 1911 In young, and even many half-grown specimens, there is plainly a single cardinal tooth, strongly curved. With advancing age there appears an indentation in the middle (above), as the anterior and posterior parts are growing more. They grow also in thickness, even the thinner anterior often becomes grooved, and at the same time the whole tooth becomes more curved, resp. Angular, resembling the two in the left valve (inversely). But a careful examination will show that the two shanks are connected. Victor was born on September 27, 1846 in Solothurn, Switzerland, the son of Anton and Magdalena (Muller) Sterki.
His early education was received in a country school and at the Gymnasium. After two years in the college of Solothurn, he studied medicine at the University of Bern and, later, at the University of Munich. A serious illness during this period left its marks upon him for life.
Having passed an examination at Munich which gave him the privilege of practising medicine, he served as polyclinical and clinical assistant in the hospital of the University of Bern, and in 1874 went into practice for himself.
In 1878, at the age of thirty-two, he received the degree of doctor of medicine. He had been engaged in a careful study of the Infusoria (Protozoa), and his doctor's dissertation, Beitrege zur Morphologie der Oxytrichinen (1878), brought favorable comment from leading zoologists of that time.
The group of Mollusca to which his name will be attached for all time, however, is the Sphaeriidae, small freshwater bivalves. These he began to study early in his American residence and they principally engaged his attention to the time of his death.
One of Sterki's most notable characteristics was his willingness to help others, especially beginners in the science, and during his residence in America he examined thousands of specimens sent to him for determination by all classes of students - the adolescent amateur and the distinguished professional.
He died in 1933.
Victor Sterki made valuable contributions to knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of small forms of mollusks, such as the Zonitidae. He amassed the largest collection of this family ever assembled and studied literally hundreds of thousands of specimens from all parts of America as well as from other sections of the world. A hundred or more species have been added to the American fauna and many yet remain to be described. His contributions were published in The Nautilus, the official organ of the conchologists of America; the Proceedings of the United States National Museum at Washington; Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and others.

He was always keenly interested in the phenomena of nature and in his youthful days made extensive collections of the fauna and flora of his neighborhood.
He was a man of genial and hospitable nature, and always unpretentious in his manner.
Quotes from others about the person
A distinguished authority on the land fauna of the United States says of his work: "In 1888 Dr. Victor Sterki published the first of a long series of studies upon American Pupidae, which have marked a great advance in our knowledge of the group, not alone in the increased number of species, but in the more just appreciation of their interrelationships" (Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia).
On February 2, 1875, he married Mary Lanz, of Huttwyl, Switzerland. A son and two daughters survived him, a third daughter having predeceased her father by a few weeks.
