After he finished school Victor Yushchenko entered the Ternopil Finance and Economics Institute.

After Victor received a degree he was sent to the Carpathians, worked as the accountant in village Yarovoe, Kosivsky district, Ivano-Frankovskaya oblast, from which he was drafted into the army. After military service in December, 1976 he got a job in regional branch of the State Bank of the USSR. Later, after he moved to Kiev, he worked in Agricultural Credit and Finance Office of the State Bank of the USSR, then he worked in Kiev Office of Agro-Industrial Bank of the USSR. In December, 1989 Yushchenko becomes the vice-chairman of Agro-Industrial Bank (renamed into bank of Ukraine in 1990).
On January 26, 1993 Victor Yushchenko was appointed chairman of the National bank of Ukraine.
In December, 1999 president of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma nominated Yushchenko to the post of the prime minister, but on April 26, 2001 he was already removed from the office.
In 2004 Victor Yushchenko announced his candidacy on the presidential election. He got to the second round where his adversary was serving prime minister Victor Yanukovych who at the end of November was announced the winner of the presidential election by the Central Electoral Committee of Ukraine. However, the opposition went to the Supreme court and demanded to cancel results of the second round. At hearings the judges were shown the document which testified that considerable quantity of ballots was thrown additionally for Yanukovich. Obvious divergences were found out in voting reports. After it was established that infringements were regular the Supreme court accepted the claim of opposition and appointed the repeat voting in the second round on December, 26.
It is most likely that such judgement would be impossible unless numerous supporters of Victor Yushchenko came out on the streets of Kiev. They Blocked buildings of parliament, the Supreme Court and the CEC. The reelection was initiated by the European Union representatives of which became negotiators. Yushchenko won the re-run of the election.
