The fifth of six children and the only girl, Victoria Massey was born in a small industrial village in the north of England, where her father was employed in the soap works. After the village suffered a series of heavy air-raids, she was evacuated to Wales, along with her elder brothers, Edward and Joe. Added to the tensions, that she faced, was the unexpected death of her father. When Massey finally returned home, she found out, that her mother remarried.
Victoria Massey attended schools in Liverpool and Camberwell. After the war, she won a scholarship to Liverpool College of Art. Later, she studied at De Montfort University in Leicester, where she received a Master of Arts degree in Literary Studies.
In her early years, Victoria worked at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London. Later, she began working in advertising. Also, wrote and illustrated stories for juvenile girls.
Victoria's first book, One Child's War, came out in 1978. In this work, she recounts her own emotions during the German bombing of her country, as seen through the eyes of her youth. After the success of her stories, she decided to begin a research project, that entailed several years of work. Inspired by observing the unfolding life and subsequent death of Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales, Massey made up her mind to find out more about these parallel lives, and her well-researched project has been published as The First Lady Diana: Lady Diana Spencer, 1710-1735.
Victoria Massey is a well-known author, who writes in the young adult non-fiction genre. One of Massey's books, One Child's War, became the basis for a BBC Woman's Hour serial, first broadcast in 1978.
Massey has been praised for her meticulous research, carried out for her biography of Lady Diana Spencer. A reviewer in Publishers Weekly commended her for not embellishing on the facts of Lady Spencer's life, thus creating a story of "British aristocracy, rather than of an individual." John Cannon, writing in Times Literary Supplement, called her book "scholarly and impressive, based on long hours among the archives." Cannon also praised Massey for not cashing in on the Princess Di craze by attempting to write an instant chronicle. In contrast, Cannon wrote, Massey chose to create a book of "lasting value."
