In Ennore, Chennai, Sethupathi attended the MGR Higher Secondary School in Kodambakkam and later shifted to the Little Angels Mat HR Sec School. Sethupathi started his acting career by appearing in smaller roles, mostly as the friend of the lead character. While the actor did not find any major role in movies, he simultaneously worked in TV series like Penn and in short films. He got his big break in 2009 when he collaborated with director Suseenthiram in his sports drama film Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu. The year 2012 marked a turning point in Sethupathi's career; he had three releases in the year and all of them were critically and commercially successful.
