Vikrant Rai is an Indian actor, director and producer known for his work in Hindi television and cinema. He rose to prominence with Kkavyanjali, Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan and Maayka before moving to films, where he appeared in Uvaa, Bhouri, Upstarts and Tatkshan. In 2026, he expanded his career into filmmaking with Cousin Isha.
Background
Vikrant Rai was born in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, India. He is the son of a retired Indian Navy personnel and spent part of his childhood in different Indian cities because of his father's postings. From his school and college years, Rai was drawn to acting and regularly participated in dramatics, plays and fancy-dress competitions. His early interest in performance eventually led him to pursue acting as a profession.
Education
Rai developed his interest in acting during his school and college years, where he participated in dramatics, stage plays and fancy-dress competitions. These early experiences helped him develop his confidence and interest in professional acting.
Career
Rai received his first major opportunity after auditioning for Balaji Productions. His performance impressed producer Ekta Kapoor, who selected him for the Star Plus television series Kkavyanjali. He made his screen debut as Jai Nanda and appeared in the series during 2005–2006. The role gave him his first significant exposure to Hindi television and established the beginning of his professional acting career.
He subsequently moved to Zee TV, where he became known for two prominent roles. In Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, he portrayed Kshitij, a straightforward, soft-spoken and kind-hearted young man opposite Kshitee Jog. The character was initially intended to be a cameo, but Rai's performance proved popular enough for the role to be expanded. He also joined Maayka – Saath Zindagi Bhar Ka as Jeet Khurana, one of the show's male leads, portraying a young singer and performer. He appeared alongside Neha Bamb and Arti Singh.
Rai's tenure on the two Zee TV productions ended in 2007 amid a dispute surrounding Maayka and a change in its production house. He publicly objected to the channel's decision and subsequently left both shows. He was replaced as Jeet in Maayka by Romit Raj and as Kshitij in Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan by Hemant Thatte. Rai subsequently decided to concentrate on building a career in cinema rather than immediately accepting further television roles. Contemporary reports noted that he received additional television offers but preferred to pursue the larger screen.
While establishing himself in television, Rai also appeared in music. In September 2007, he featured in the T-Series album Phir Bewafai, performing the song “Mere Dil Ki Hai Awaaz.” The song, made on a limited budget, gained attention as a sleeper hit.
Rai's first planned feature-film lead was Kya Time Hai Yaar, a comedy produced by Sanjay Kapur and Anju Rajiv under the Shri Omh Creations banner. He was cast alongside Jackie Shroff, Asrani, Mukesh Tiwari and Sanjay Mishra, with dialogue by Kader Khan and music by Bappi Lahiri. Although the project was intended to mark his transition to leading roles in Hindi cinema, the film was ultimately not released. Rai also became associated with the proposed film Chand Lamhe Zindagi, directed by Shiraz Sayyed.
His transition to the big screen eventually came with Uvaa (2015), in which he played Ram Pratap in a social comedy-drama about a group of young men whose lives change after a serious incident brings them into conflict with the law. The film marked Rai's Bollywood debut in a leading role. In interviews surrounding the release, he described acting as his passion and said that performing on the big screen had long been one of his principal ambitions. He also emphasized that television and cinema should not be treated as fundamentally different forms of entertainment.
Rai followed Uvaa with Bhouri (2016), a social drama centered on the exploitation of women in a male-dominated rural society. He subsequently appeared in Upstarts (2019), a Hindi drama-comedy about three graduates who establish a start-up while attempting to balance their ambitions, business pressures and friendship.
His later work included the crime thriller Tatkshan (2024), in which he portrayed Sub-Inspector Harsh Dubey, an upright and determined police officer investigating the discovery of an unidentified body in Lucknow. The role represented a new direction in his screen career, with Rai taking on a tougher police character and appearing as the film's solo lead.
Rai subsequently expanded his involvement in filmmaking beyond acting. In 2026, he turned to directing with Cousin Isha, a Hindi romantic film set in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh. He serves as the film's director and also plays the male lead, Ajit Gupta. The story follows Ajit, the son of a small-town sweet-shop owner, after heartbreak changes the course of his life and a distant cousin named Isha unexpectedly enters it.
The project has particular personal significance for Rai because of its connection to his native region. He has described Cousin Isha as a love story intended to present a different side of Azamgarh and noted that the feature was shot entirely in the area. The film features Surabhi Talodia, Anjuman Saxena, Naresh Gosain and Prateek Pachauri alongside Rai, with music performed by singers including Shaan, Shahid Mallya and Rahul Mishra.
Rai has also appeared in television projects beyond his early Zee TV successes. His later television work includes Do Sau Karod Ki Botal and Feroz Abbas Khan's Main Kuch Bhi Kar Sakti Hoon, in which he appeared across its first three seasons. The latter was a socially oriented series whose episodes drew inspiration from real-life stories.

Rai has maintained a connection with Azamgarh throughout his career. Although his father's service in the Indian Navy meant that the family lived in different cities during his childhood, he later returned to his native region as the setting for Cousin Isha, seeking to present Azamgarh and the wider Purvanchal area through cinema.
