1923-1930 taught Russ, language and literature at workers' faculty. 1930-1952 Head, Chair of Russia Language, Yaroslavl Pedagogical Institute, Lvov University, and Potemkin Pedagogical Institute, Moscow. 1950-1952 Executive Editor, journal “Russky yazyk v shkole” (Russian Language in the School).
Since 1957 Deputy Chief Editor, journal “Izvestiya Academy of Sciences USSR” (News of the USSR Academy of Sciences). 1954-1961 Director, Institute of Linguistics, USSR Academy of Science. Since 1958 V.-President, International Comt, of Slavists.
Since 1960 member, Committee Lenin Prizes for Science and Technology, USSR Council of Ministers (Philology). Works deal mainly with hist, syntax of Ancient Russ, and Russ, dialectology.
