Graduate Institute of Red Professor. Career. 1918 one of first Communist Youth League members. Organized youth activities in his home town.
During Civil War political work on Polish Front. 1922 did underground Party work in Far East. 1923 began writing career in Sverdlovsk, then moved to Moscow.
Wrote satirical articles and lit reviews for Pravda and Komsomolskaya pravda-, joined "Lit Front” group. 1931-1936 Telegraphic Agency of the USSR correspondent in Italy and France. 1937 ed, ’’Journal dc Moscou”.
1937 arrested by People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs. His novel ”On the Other Side” has been adapted for the stage and screen under such titles as Nasha molodost' (Our Youth) (in mid-1930’s by S. Kartashyov) and Kogda gorit serdtse (When the Heart Is Aflame) (1957 by V. Gol'dfcl’d). It has also been translated into several languages.
Joined the Bolshevik Party, 1920. Before that, already active as one of the first members of the Komsomol. Fought against the peasant uprising in Tambov.
Political commissar during the SovietPolish war. Communist underground agent in the Far East. At the end of the Civil War, started to write, and became a well-known journalist with Komsomolskaia Pravda.
