After graduating Communistic higher educational institution, he was performing party and soviet work. In 1929, in the village of Ust-Medveditskaya, he met A.S. Serafimovich, who played a big role in the artistic future of Petrov. In the 1930s he was the head of the political department in the machine-tractor station, the sugar beet farm (Paninsky district), the director of the Zoological Veterinary College (zoovetechnic), (the village of Kon-Kolodez of the Khlevensky district). Executive secretary of the Voronezh department of the Union of Soviet Writers (since 1939). Chairman of the Regional Committee (end of 1941 - summer 1942).
He was married, he has a son.
