Proust, Paris: Minuit. (1989) Philosophie par gros temps, Paris: Minuit. After his early critique of psychoanalysis (1977), Vincent Descombes has written a series of analytical studies of the twentieth-century French philosophical scene. These studies bring the critical tools of analytic philosophy to the understanding of French philosophy, in terms of central historical movements and contemporary questions (1979) and in terms of an analysis of the objects of philosophies (1983). In a similar approach (1989), Descombes questions the way contemporary French philosophies think about the present and predict the future in terms of metaphysics and ontologies.
