Megaw was educated at the University College London Institute of Archaeology and Edinburgh University, and worked on a number key sites in Europe.

He is a specialist in early Celtic art, contemporary Australian Indigenous art, and museology. In 1961, he accepted a position at the University of Sydney as lecturer in European Iron Age Archaeology. Ruth Megaw died in 2013.
He was elected to the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1985.
