(In sketching some of the literary women of New-York, thei...)
In sketching some of the literary women of New-York, their salons, their achievements, their home life, Mrs. Botta naturally headed the list. Famed editor and publisher, Horace Greeley, said of her, "Anne Lynch is the best woman that God ever made." Edgar Allen Poe, who gave the first reading of "The Raven" in her salon said, "She is chivalric, self-sacrificing, equal to any fate, capable even of martyrdom, in whatever should seem to her a holy cause. She has a hobby, and this is, the idea of duty." Her weekly New York literary salon included everyone who was anyone of her day. She was universally admired, loved, and respected. Included in this volume are letters to her from Daniel Webster, Andrew Carnegie, Ralph Emerson. Her own sensitive writing was in poetry and prose but her art was the encouragement of other talents. She took great pride in the accomplishments of women. As she refused to write her autobiography, her husband gathered these memories from her dearest friends and published them after her death in 1891. For the first time, this long out-of-print book is available in an affordable, well-formatted edition for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample. Some of the guests in her salon included Poe, Willis, Morris, Fanny Osgood, Emerson, Mrs. Whitman, Dr. Brownson, Crancb, Cheney, Bryant, Theodore Sedgwick, Clark, Irving, the Cary sisters, Bancroft, Halleck, Grace Greenwood, Greeley, Tuckerman, Stoddard, Dr. Holland, Bigelow, Mrs. Mary Mapes Dodge, Mrs. Kirkland, Huntington, E. Booth, Dr. Bellows, H. Giles, Bayard Taylor, H. W. Beecher, Raymond, Stedman, Helen Hunt, Mrs. Leonowens, Miss North, E. Lazarus, A. D. White, Bartholdi, R. Proctor, Froude, Charles Kingsley, Matthew Arnold, Lord Houghton, Lord Amberley, Lyulph Stanley. Madame Ristori, Salvini, Pechter, Campanini, and Madame Gerster.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Vincenzo Botta was born on November 11, 1818, at Cavallermaggiore, Piedmont, Italy.
Graduating from the University of Turin, Botta taught philosophy at his alma mater, at Cuneo, and then again at Turin. From this university, he received the degree of doctor of philosophy.
Destined for the Church, Botta gave up all thought of the priesthood shortly after he entered upon his ecclesiastical studies.
In 1849, he was elected to the Sardinian Parliament where he rendered important service in the cause of Italian unity. In conjunction with Dr. Parola, he was appointed in 1850 by the government to examine into the educational system of Germany. His report was printed by the State.
In 1853, he came to the United States to study our public school methods and was so attracted by the country and the opportunities offered here that he settled in New York City and became a naturalized citizen.
In 1871, Victor Emmanuel made Botta a Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy, and in 1879 King Humbert sent him a gold medal struck in honor of his services to Italy in the United States.
He was called to teach Italian language and literature in the University of the City of New York, a position he held until a few years before his death.
On the night of October 3, 1894, in his seventy-sixth year, Botta fell from the window of his bedroom in the third story of his house and died two days after from his injuries. In his will, he left his library and his own bust in marble to the University of the City of New York, and his works of art to the National Academy.
