Background

Hoxie, Vinnie Ream was born on September 25, 1847 in Madison, Wisconsin, United States. Daughter of Robert Lee and Lavinia (McDonald) Ream.

Education

Educated Christian College, Missouri. Studied art under Bonnât in Paris, and with Majoli, Rome, Italy.

Career

Received commission from Congress to execute life-size statue of Abraham Lincoln. He sat for his bust at the White House, and his statue is now in rotunda of Capitol. Later Congress commissioned her to make the statue of Admiral Farragut which now stands in Farragut Square, Washington.

Executed ideal statues of “Miriam,” “The West,” “Sappho,” “The Spirit of the Carnival,” “The Indian Girl”.

Also many busts in marble, including one of President Lincoln (for Cornell Univercity). Has modeled from life portraits busts or medallions of General George B. McClellan, Thaddeus Stevens, John Sherman, Ezra Cornell, General J. C. Fremont, T. Buchanan Read, Elihu B. Washburn, Horace Greeley, Peter Cooper, and other prominent Americans.

And of Cardinal Antonelli, Père Hyacinthe, Spurgeon, Franz Liszt, Gustave Dore, and Kaulbach. Commissioned by the state of Iowa to make statue of Governor Samuel J. Kirkwood, and by Oklahoma to make statue of Sequoya, both to be placed in National Capitol.
