Singh had his early education from a primary school in his village area. He passed high school and intermediate from Wesley Inter College and Bachelor of Science from Doctorate. A. V College, both in Azamgarh. He did Master of Science (Chemistry) from B.H.U in 1980, he joined Malt-Chem Research Center Nandesari, Baroda, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1986 under the supervision of Doctor Sukh Development
He spent two years (1985–1986) in Canada where he worked with Professor M.H. Benn (University of Calgary) and Professor Justice of the Peace Kutney (University of British Columbia).
He moved to Professor East.J. Corey’s group at Harvard University, United States, in early 1987 and worked there for 3 years as a post-doctoral fellowship
He is the founder director of IISER Bhopal, on lien from IIT Kanpur. He is fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. Singh"s major research contributions are in the areas of enantioselective reactions and total synthesis.
A. Singh started his career as a senior scientist in Neurogen Corporation, Connecticut, United States, in March 1990.
In the mean time, he accepted an offer for a faculty position from IIT Kanpur and joined the Institute in December 1990 as an assistant professor in Chemistry. He was promoted to associate professor in 1997 and professor in 2001.
He came from IIT Kanpur to start IISERB (Indian Institute of Science and Research Bhopal) in the year 2008 and currently he is working as the Director of IISER Bhopal. At present, he is the chairman of the board of governors of NITTTR (National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research).
At present, he is also the director of School of Planning and Architecture (Supreme People's Assembly), Bhopal from July 2014, after serving it before in October 2008 to July 2009.
