Sergiy graduated from Moscow Theological Divinity School in 1970 and Moscow Theological Academy in 1974.
Sergiy became a monk in 1973. From 1973 to 1974, he was the head of the office of Moscow Theological Academy and Theological Divinity School. He passed a postgraduate course at Moscow Theological Academy from 1974 to 1977. Sergiy worked as an assistant of the Department of External Church Relations from 1977 to 1978.
Sergiy was a representative of the Patriarchate of Moscow at the Christian Peace Conference in Prague from 1978 to 1982. From 1982 to 1984, he was the deputy chairman of the Department of External Church Relations. He was the Bishop (from 1983), Archbishop (from 1988) and the Metropolitan (from 1999) of Solnechnogorsk. He also was the Vicar of the Diocese of Moscow. He was a representative of the Russian Orthodox Church at the World Council of Churches in Geneva from 1985 to 1991.
From 1991, Sergiy is the chairman of the Department for Social Service and Charity of the Patriarchate of Moscow. He was the head of the Patriarchate and Permanent Member of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church from 1996 to 2003. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Orthodox Encyclopedia from 1999 to 2003. Sergiy was a co-chair of the commission of the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation and the Russian Orthodox Church, co-chair of the commission for interaction of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and the Russian Orthodox Church from 1996 to 2005.
From May 2003, Sergiy is the Metropolitan of Voronezh and Borisoglebsk. He is the Metropolitan of Voronezh and Liski from 2013. He was approved as the priest-archimandrite of the Assumption Divnogorsk Monastery in settlement Divnogorye, Liskinsky District, Voronezh Oblast in 2014. From December 2013 to June 2016, he temporarily managed the Diocese of Borisoglebsk.
