Vivian Vande Velde was born on June 18, 1951, in Rochester, New York, United States. She is a daughter of Pasquale Brucato, a linotype operator, and Marcelle Brucato (maiden name Giglio).
Vivian Vande Velde has been fascinated by reading books, especially the fantasy, and making up her own stories since her early childhood. Most of her stories were a hotchpotch from the well-known writings about Cinderella, the legend of Ivanhoe, or the story about Superman. The passion had a bad influence on her progress in high school, even in English.
In 1969, Vande Velde entered the College at Brockport, State University of New York. She left it a year later unsatisfied with the curriculum of its literature courses. From 1970 to 1971, Vivian was trained as a secretary at the Rochester Business Institute (currently Everest Institute Rochester).
Having a diploma in secretarial practice, Vivian Vande Velde started her career in this area. During the break after the birth of her daughter in 1979, Velde realized that she was still attached to her childish hobby of inventing stories, and made a strong decision to become a professional writer.
One of the first books she wrote, ‘A Hidden Magic’, saw publication in 1985. It exemplified her talent for transforming old tales into new ones. Since then, Velde has issued about twenty books for youngsters and young adults that successfully combine the elements of fantasy and mystery, or retell the well-known fairy stories from the new point of view, often in a humorous way. One of the author’s recent publications is a 2018 book ‘The Prince Problem’.
Nowadays, Vivian Vande Velde lives and works in Rochester. In addition to her activity as a writer, she is also involved in the variety of literary events for children organized in schools including book conventions, and writing classes.
Vivian Vande Velde is an accomplished writer whose books are praised for the protean character of their content which embodies mystery and fantasy at once.
Velde has been a recipient of many awards, including Blue Ribbon Book Award, Edgar Allan Poe Award, Anne Spencer Lindbergh Prize in Children's Literature, Black-Eyed Susan Award, and Volunteer State Book Award among others.
Many of Velde’s writings, like ‘A Hidden Magic’, have been repeatedly chosen as Books of the Year or featured in the top literature lists of various institutions, including the International Reading Association List, the National Council of Teachers of English, the American Booksellers Association, the Young Adult Library Services Association, and others.
