Career
Attended the Central Music School, Moscow, aged 8. Moscow debut, 1954. Second prize in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw,
1955. Student of Moscow Conservatory.
Gold medal in the Queen Elizabeth Competition, Brussels,
1956. The next year made his debut in the United States and Canada. Joint first prize in the Tchaikovskii Competition, Moscow, 1962.
Debut in London, 1963. Announced his desire to settle in the West with his Icelandic wife and their child (17 April 1963), but returned to Moscow in May of the same year. Left again for London two months later.
Toured Japan, 1965. Settled in Iceland, 1968. Conductor of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, 1969. Conducted the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, 1976.
Conductor with the New Philharmonic Orchestra, 1977. Moved to Lucerne, Switzerland, for tax reasons, 1978. Recorded the Mozart piano concerto cycle, Chopin’s solo piano works etc., 1978.
Concerts in China, 1979. In 1981 appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra. In 1983 conducted the Cleveland Orchestra.
Relinquished his Philharmonia post. In 1984, made a new recording of the Beethoven piano concertos.
