1914-1917 officer (last rank: Cossack captain), 46th Don Cossack Regt, Russian Army. After 1917 October Revol sided with Soviet regime. From December 1917 comissar, then commander, Red Guard detachmetns.
From August 1918 commanded Arsk Group of Red Guard detachments, 2nd Army on the Eastern Front. Commander, 2nd Composite Division. Helped crush anti-Soviet peasant revolts.
His Arsk Group played an important part in the liberation of Kazan’. H*s div captured Izhevsk and Yekaterinburg and fought at Tsaritsyn.
