Educated at a private school in Bernkastel, 1953.
Lived near Moscow before World War II. With his parents in Nazi labour camps and DP camps in Germany, 1944-1948. With Polish Guards in the US Army in West Germany, Kaiserslautern, 1954-1955. Journalist and news editor with Radio Liberty, Munich, 1955-1961.
Moved to London. Journalist with the BBC External Services, 1961-1966. Bibliographer and academic bookseller (Iskander), 1966-1975. London correspondent of Radio Liberty, 1975-1981.
With the BBC Russian Service, 1981. Travelled widely in Europe and America. Met and interviewed many famous personalities (Kerenskii, Akhmatova, Solzhenitsyn, Rostropovich, Medvedev and many religious leaders).
Wrote on historical, philosophical and religious subjects. Edited modern Russian writers. Lives in London and Somerset.
