Two years of night school. Studied at a Party school in France.
From 1903 in revol movement. Worked at Vysotskiy Factory, Odessa. 1906-1907 staged several strikes at Odessa enterprises.
1908 emigrated to France, where he met Lenin. 1909 returned to Odessa and set up illegal printing press 1910 arrested, held for two years in jail, then exiled to Yenisey Province.
1912 fled from exile to Odessa, thence abroad. 1915 together with Inessa Armand translated into French Lenin’s work Sotsializm i voyna / Otnosheniye Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party k voyne (Socialism and War / The Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party's Attitude to War) and arranged its publication. July 1917 returned to Odessa, worked at a factory and was elected to Odessa City Soviet of Worker’s Deputy.
Then chairman. Printers’ union. Delcg at 3rd All-Russian Congress of Soviets. Late 1918, on instructions from the Odessa Oblast Party Committee, set up and directed the ’’Foreign Board” which carried out propaganda work among French sailors.
February 1919 set up an underground revol comt. From April 1919 again in charge of the "Foreign Board," now engaged in propaganda work in Europe. August 1919 Communist International assignments in France and Italy.
August 1920 returned to France, was arrested and after few months’ imprisonment returned via Germany to Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. From 1921 chairman Ivanovo-Voznesensk Province Trade-Union Council. From 1924 head, Agitation and Propaganda Department, and deputy chairman, All-Union Centr Trade-Union Council.
Delegation at 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Communist International Congresses. From 1931 Collegium member, then Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Deputy People's Commissar of Labor. Later Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Deputy People's Commissar of Justice and Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Procurator.
31 July 1938 arrested and convicted.
