Since 1977 he worked in various positions in the central office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs USSR / RF and in diplomatic missions abroad. From 1991 till 1997 Vladimir Dmitrievich Dorokhin worked as the Minister - Counsellor of the USSR / Russian Federation Embassy in the Republic of Hungary. Since April, 1998 he held the position of Deputy Director and acting director. Since March, 1999 Vladimir Dmitrievich worked as a Director of the Department for Cultural Relations and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. From the twenty-eighth of August, 2001 till the tenth of October, 2005 Dorokhin worked as an Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador in the Republic of Zambia. On the twenty-fourth of February, 2009 he was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
