From his early youth attracted to animal training. 1883 debut at Vinkler’s Circus-Menagery in Moscow. 1885 with Bezano Circus in Astrakhan’. Performed as clown, strongman, singer of satiric songs, conjurer, impersonator and animal trainer. 1887 with Salamonskiy Circus in Moscow. 1912 set up and ran an experimental station in Moscow. 1919 set up a laboratory for animal psychology. Performed with large groups of animals. Also gave popular sci lectures. Founded a school of circus art and compiled a curriculum for lieutenant Worked out a system of animal training based on study of natural instincts in animals and humane treatment of animals. Presented mimes involving trained animals, best known of which was ’The Railroad” (1901).
