1905-1908 studied at Munich University, subsequently at History and Philology Faculty, Moscow University.
1915-1917 in Russian Army. 1919-1921 in Red Army. From 1921 instructor, Moscow art colleges.
1923-1925 rector, Moscow Higher Technical Art Workshops. Then professor, Moscow State Higher Technical Art Institute, Moscow Polytech Institute, Institute of Fine Arts and Institute of Architecture. 1958-1962 correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Arts.
Specialized in wood-cuts for book illustrations. 1925 helped found "Association of Easel Painters”. Designed facade for Soviet pavilion at 1937 Paris World Fair.
Decorated stage portal for Moscow Soviet Army Theater and did ceiling paintings for a Moscow subway station (1935). Did sets for numerous plays in Soviet theaters. Illustrated Russian and for classics.
His works were exhibited at 1958 Brussels Fair. Wjorks: sculptures: ’’Chess” (1910). "Battle of David and Goliath” (1911).

Engraving "Triple Portrait” (1910). Illustrations foreign Slovo о polka fgoreve (The Lay of the Host of Igor (1950), Boris Godunov and Associate of Science Pushkin (1954). Mosaic at Soviet Embassy in Warsaw (1955).
Member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Arts from 1962. Member, Board, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Painters' Union.
