1906-1914 studied at Saint St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
While still a student began work with Academy V. A. Shchuko. From 1918 mutually designed a number of major architectural projects. This partnership continued for more than 20 years until Shchuko’s death in 1939.
1922-1923 they designed in Leningrad the Smol’nyy Propylcum gateway. 1924-1925 three Volkhovstroy sub-stations. 1924-1925 the architectural part of the Lenin Monument at Smol’nyy and 1928 of the Lenin Monument at Leningrad’s Finnish Terminus.
1930 their designs were used for the construction of the monumental Lenin Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Library in Moscow. 1932-1933 took part in competition for the design of Palace of Soviets in Moscow. From 1933, together with V. A. Shchuko and B. M. Iofan, worked on design of the Palace of Soviets (on the basis of an original design by B. M. Iofan).
Gel’freykh'and Shchuko designs were basis for: 1931-1935 Gorky Theater in Rostov-on-Don. Abkhazian Government Building in Sukhumi. 1936-1938 the Grand Stone Bridge across the Moskva River (together with M. A. Minkus).
1939 Main Pavilion, All-Union Agric Exhibition in Moscow (together with A. P. Velikanov and Yu. V. Shchuko); 1943 co-designed the ground-level entrance-hall of the Novokuznetskaya and 1944 the Elektrozavodskaya subway station. 1948 together with M. A. Minkus designed the 27-slory admin building (after an original 20-story' design) on Moscow’s Smolensk Square.
From 1919 taught at architectural institutes. From 1959 taught at Moscow Higher Indiana Arts college (former Stroganov College). 1947-1956 member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Architecturc.
1956-1963 member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Construction and Architecture. Head, Number 4 Main Workshop Moscow Design Institute.
