Career
Relative of G. A. Gershuni, leader of the SR Party and famous terrorist (1870-1908). First arrested in 1949, aged 17, for belonging to an illegal anti-Stalinist youth group, the Union of Young Leninists. Received a 10- year sentence which he served in the Akibastuz camp (well documented by A. Solzhenitsyn in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich).
Had met Solzhenitsyn earlier in the Butyrki prison in Moscow, and later in Akibastuz. Released in 1955. Various manual jobs. Took part in the human rights campaign.
Arrested, 1969. Sentenced to a term in the Orel Special Psychiatric Prison to be treated for schizophrenia. In 1971, managed to send his notes about the hospital out to the West. As a result, Amnesty International protested to the Soviet Government.
Released, 1974. Dedicated his time to literary activity. His articles about history and ethnography appeared in the academic press. Arrested again in 1981, and sent to psychiatric hospital in Alma-Ata.
Released, 3 December 1987.
