IPAT’YEV, Vladimir was born on February 21, 1867.
1892 graduate Mikhaylov Artillery Academy, Saint St. Petersburg.
1892-1900 assistant head, Chemical Laboratory, from 1900 professor, Mikhaylov Artillery Academy. Also worked for Academy of Sciences and State High-Pressure Chemical Research Institute. 1921-1922 Presidium member and head, Department of the Chemical Indiana, Supreme Economic Council.
1927 sent abroad on official business and never returned to Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. From 1930 worked for Universal Oil Products Company, Chicago. Professor, Northwestern University, Chicago.
Did first research on the reaction of tertiary alcohols and bromine. Devised new methods of synthesizing hydrocarbons. 1900 began research on catalytic reactions at high pressures and temperatures, especially the reactions of hydrogenation, dehydration (over aluminum oxide), olefine polymerization, destructive hydrogenation and alkylation.
Developed polymerization process for the production of high-octane gasoline. Devised several new catalysts for the extraction of fuels and dies. Was one of first sci to try to determine the chemical affinity of catalysts, especially mixed catalysts.
Pointed out the role of promoters in the process of catalysis. Made major contribution to industry catalysis. 1936 expelled from Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences for refusal to return to Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics.
