From 1894 worked at Main Botanical Garden (Botanical Institute, USSR Academy of Sciences). 1902-1918 associate professor, 1918-1937 professor and head, Chair of Botany, St. Petersburg (Leningrad) University. Also taught at other higher educational establishments.
1914-1920 correspondent member, 1920-1930 member, 1930-1936 vice-president, Russian (USSR) Academy of Sciences. 1931-1945 director, Plant Taxonomy and Geography Department, Botanical Institute, USSR Academy of Sciences. 1944-1945 also director, Institute of the History of Nature Studies, USSR Academy of Sciences.
Specialized in taxonomy, floristics and plant geography. Made sevend field trips: 1892-1893 to Centr Asia. 1896-1897 to Manchuria and Korea.
1913, 1930, 1932 and 1935 to Far East. 1934, 1936 and 1937 to France. Proved the necessity of considering both latitudinal and meridional characteristics in biogcographical zoning.
Attached prime importance to the environment in the development of species and considered a given species to be a definite stage in the process of evolution. From 1934 supervised the compilation and publ of the encyclopedic work Flora SSSR (The Flora of the USSR). 1930-1945 chairman, All- Union Botanical Social.
1936 deputy, USSR Supreme Soviet. Wrote some 300 works and gave his name to several plant genera and species, as well as to the Botanical Institute, USSR Academy of Sciences.
