Korolenko, Vladimir was born on July 27, 1853 in Zhitomir. Son of a Ukrainian judge and a Polish gentlewoman.
Studied at the Petersburg Technical Institute, 1871, and the Petrovskaia Agricultural Academy in Moscow, 1874. Educated at Rovno High School. Studied at the Petersburg Technical Institute, 1871, and the Petrovskaia Agricultural Academy in Moscow, 1874.
1876 expelled from Petrine Agric Academy for taking part in student riots. Late 1870’s close contacts with revol Populist circles in Saint St. Petersburg. 1879 arrested and spent some six years in prison and exile (Vyatka Province and Permanent’.
1881 exiled to Yakutia). 1885-1895 lived in Nizhniy Novgorod, where he continued his writing and engaged in soc-political work. Contributed to provincial press, Russkaya my siRusskiye vedomosti, Severnyy vestnik, et cetera
1896 moved to Saint St. Petersburg and helped publish Populist journal Russkoye bogatstvo. Described popular life from humanistic and democratic standpoint. Helped mitigate horrors of 1891-1892 famine.
1900 elected Honorary member, Russian Academy of Sciences. 1902, together with Chekhov, renounced Honorary membership in protest against rejection of Gorky's candidature. From 1900 lived in Poltava.
As peasant democrat, attacked autocratic excesses, anti-semitism, military field courts and death penalty. 1887-1895 active member, Nizhniy Novgorod Province Archives Commission. This work inspired in him an interest in Russian history and led him to write several works of historical fiction.
1890’s began collecting material for historical novel on Pugachev rebellion - Nabeglyy tsar (The Marauding Tsar), but the novel was never completed. 1906 worked on biography of Populist revolutionary 1. North. Myshkin, with whom he was personally acquainted.
His interest in history is most clearly expressed in his Istoriya moyego sovremennika (The History of My Contemporary) (1922), reflecting many soc aspects of pre-reform Russia. Wrote articles and reminiscences of many soc and lit figures, including North. G. Chernyshevskiy, L. North. Tolstoy, North. K. Mikhaylovskiy, G. 1. Uspcnskiy; wrote some 700 articles, reports, essays and notes.
