Studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1861-1866) under E.Sorokin and S.Zarianko. Studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1861-1866) under E.Sorokin and S.Zarianko.
Taught there from 1882-1894, and at the Petersburg Academy of Arts, 1894-1918. From 1895, rector of the Academy of Arts’ School of Arts. From 1872, a member of the Peredvizhniki.
All his works from this period are held in the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow. Exhibitions: from 1862-1905, at the Academy of Arts. TPKHV, MOLKH, All-Russian, Moscow, the Society of Water-Colour Painters, All-Russian, Nizhnii Novgorod, and the Russian Portraits, Tavricheskii Palace.
