1903-1906 worked as Party propagandist and organizer in Kolomna. 1905 savagely beaten by Cossacks. 1906-1907 in Geneva Party group.
1907-1909 member, Moscow Okrug Party Committee. 1910 helped establish Tula Party organisation. 1912-1913 again in Kolomna.
Fall 1913 ed, Bolshevik newspaper “Nash put’ ”. 1914 exiled to Khar’kov and placed under police surveillance. Thence deported to Samara, where he was arrested and exiled to Irkutsk Province.
1917-1918 secretary, Moscow Oblast Executive Committee and Moscow Oblast Party Committee. 1918-1919 Collegium member, People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs. 1919-1920 head, Registration and Distribution Department, Party Central Committee, then head, Registration and Distribution Department, Main Polit Board, People's Commissariat of Means of Communication.
1919-1920 chairman, Ryazan’ Province Food Conference. 1921 deputy chairman, Main Polit Education Committee, People's Commissariat of Education. 1922 Deputy People's Commissar of Education.
Then worked for All-Russian Central Executive Committee Publ House. From 1925 dean, Economy Faculty, Timiryazev Agric Academy. Presidium member, Communist Academy.
Taught at various higher educational establishments. During Brest-Litovsk Peace Treaty controversy sided with Leftist Communist. 1920-1921 active member, “Democratic Centralism” group.
1923 joined “New Opposition”. 1925 broke with opposition after 14th Party Congress. Arrested by State Security organs.
