1904 teacher, Likhvin City College, Tula Oblast. From 1922 high-school teacher. 1924-1931 directed educational research center and worked for higher educational establishments in Saratov.
1934-1941 head, Chair of Pedagogics, Moscow City Teachers’ Training Institute. 1943-1945 head, Chair of Pedagogics, Moscow State University. From 1944 director, Institute of Teaching Methods, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Academy of Pedagogical Sciences.
Specialized in general problems of educational theory, particularly didactics and study of the Soviet schoolchild.
