1902 graduate Law Faculty, Moscow University. Simultaneously studied singing under his mother, a professor at Moscow Philharmonic College. Perfected his singing in Berlin and Dresden.
Performed in various German towns. 1914 at Zimin Opera Theater. From 1918 opera producer.
1920-1936 at Bolshoy Theater. From 1936 teaching work. From 1940 professor, Moscow Conservatory.
Roles: Almaviva; Jose. Ottavio in “Don Juan”. Walter in “Tannhäuser”.
The Singer in Richard Strauss’ “Der Rosenkavalier,” etc. Directed operas: Auber’s “Fra Diavolo” (1923). Rimsky-Korsakov’s Motsart Sal’yeri (Mozart and Salieri) (1926).
