1896-1899 did postgraduate work at South.P. Fyodorov’s Surgical Clinic, Saint St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy. 1899 defended doctor’s thesis on lymphatic angiomas, after which he was sent abroad for further specialist training. Worked under Virchow and Mechnikov.
1908-1918 head, Chair of Surgical Pathology, Therapy and Clinical Practice, Saint St. Petersburg (Petrograd) Military Medical Academy. 1918-1932 head, Chair of Academy Surgical Clinical Practice, Petrograd (Leningrad) Military Medical Academy. Wrote first Russian description of “war drainage” and reduced blood circulation. Also made major contributions to traumatology, including a prizewinning study on the prevention of frostbite among soldiers in the field Trained numerous outstanding surgeons and wrote over 200 works.
