1910 graduated Physico-Mathematical Faculty, Moscow University. Specialized at Chair of Physiology and Anatomy of Plants, Moscow University.
1921-1935 at Moscow Chemical and Pharmaceutical Institute. 1935-1937 Director,Department of Industry Microbiology, Institute of Microbiology, USSR Academy of Science. Since 1919 engaged in studies on microbiology.
1935 organized Laboratory of Industry Microbiology, Moscow Chemical and Pharmaceutical Institute. After World War II organized Laboratory of Antibiotics, Chair of Microbiology, Moscow University. 1923 helped develop a method of producing citric acid with Penicillium arenareum and lactic acids with Bacterium delbriickii; 1929 developed a method of producing acetone and butanol by fermentation.
1935 helped found USSR’s first acetonebutyl plant at Grozny and vinegar plant at Kazan. Established the two phases of fermentation processes and worked out a classification of fermenting microorganisms. Member, Editor Board, journal “Mikrobiologiya” (Microbiology), and member, Editor Council, journal "Antibiotiki” (Antibiotics).
