Vladimir Terebun is a Belarusian sculptor, graphic artist, painter. He created many famous monuments and was awarded many prestigious awards. He creates sculptures, monuments, paintings, ceramics, works with glass and metal.
Background
Vladimir Terebun was born on April 11, 1946 in a village of Nestenyaty, Smorgon district. The family had 6 children. Later, they moved to village Sviridovichi, where Vladimir’s father worked at the lumber mill. He often brought home trimming, and Vladimir used them for his first statuettes. Afterwards, they moved to Smorgon.
Education
In Smorgon, Vladimir studied at the local secondary school No 1 (1953-1964).He organized orchestras of cembalo and folk instruments, wrote music himself, enjoyed photography. He wished to become a musician, but his brother was also a cembalist, so Vladimir decided to enter the Institute of Art and Theater, but at that time there were no department of sculpture. Vladimir tried to enter the department of Ceramics, but unsuccessfully and from 1965 to 1968 he served in the Soviet Army. In 1968-1973, he studied at the Belarusian State Institute of Art and Theater, Department of Sculpture (today’s Belarusian State Academy of Arts).
Career
The first most known monument my Terebun was his Diploma project memorial complex “Dalva”, created in 1973 and dedicated to the war. Upon graduation from the Institute in 1973, Vladimir Terebun moved to Grodno. He worked there for 27 years. In 1977, he joined Belarusian Union of Artists. At that period, he actively painted, created compositions of glass and metal for public buildings, wooden sculptures in the traditions of Belarusian folk art, a series of pencil drawings (cycle "Racurs"). Vladimir Terebun actively participated in exhibitions, repeatedly representing Belarusian art outside the Republic: in Moscow, St. Petersburg (Russian Federation), Siauliai (Lithuania), Bialystok (Poland). He created many monuments and sculptures in Grodno: sculptures at Belush Street "Always on the lookout" and "Sail" at the hotel "Tourist", many memorial plaques – for the participants of the first meeting of the Soviet of workers' deputies in Grodno, Polish writer Zofia Nalkowska, Soviet General Antonov. From 1979 to 1987, Terebun headed Grodno regional organization of the Belarusian Union of Artists. Afterwards, he became the chairman of the Grodno Foundation for Free Modern Art (1991-1995). In 1989, he founded the first Grodno informal association of artists - the cooperative "Run’", which in 1992, was transformed into the Foundation for Free Art. Both organizations held 36 art exhibitions in their 5-years existence period. Terebun was a Deputy of the Grodno City Council of Deputies during 2 convocations and a member of the City Party Committee.
In 2001, he moved to Minsk, and worked there till 2015. In 2006-2014, he worked in a team on the design and construction of the memorial complex on the confrontation line in the World War I in Smorgon. His works were widely exhibited in Grodno, Minsk, Lida, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Troitsk, Zelenograd, Tallinn, Panevezys, Siauliai, Druskininkai, Warsaw, Mindane, Rostock, and many others. He is a member of the studio of military artists. The heroic theme passes through the entire work of the sculptor. Since 2015, he lives and works in his native Smorgon. Terebun have created many portraits of famous people: Yuri Gagarin, K.Tsyalkovski, A. Volchetskaya, A. Szydlowski, etc. On April 23, 2006, the 14th solo exhibition entitled "On the waves of time" was opened in his home town of Smorgon. It was dedicated to the 60th birth anniversary of the sculptor. Terebun presented more than 150 works: sculpture, ceramics, watercolors, drawings, photographs, entitled "Chronicle" and "New Projects", monumental works. In November of the same year, the exhibition was successfully held in Grodno. In April 2012, 16th solo exhibition entitled "Unfulfilled dreams in my works" was held in Smorgon. Terebun presented 35 projects. The period of 2013-2014 was very productive. Terebun’s monument "Echo of the War”, dedicated to the soldiers-internationalists of Smorgon, was raised in his home town. The composition “Bear’s Academy" was raised at the central park. The sculptor continues his art work.
