From 1918 studied at 2nd, then 3rd Studio, Moscow Arts Theater.
1924-1926 at Mcyerhold Theater. From 1925 concentrated on variety work. 1927, together with his regular producer Ye.
Ye. Popova, founded Contemporary Theater, a monodrama theater which existed until 1935. Gave straight lit readings and also compiled his own shows, involving readings of verse and fiction, journalistic and sci works, memoirs, letters and even excerpts from newspapers. His shows of this type included Torzhestvennoye obeshchaniye (Solemn Pledge) (1929), about Stalin’s first five-year plan and Novyye gody (New Years) (1935).
1937, for the anniversary of Pushkin’s death, gave four special programs. In the first of these he devoted two evenings to a complete reading of Yevgeniy Onegin (Eugene Onegin). 1940 presented a “Yesenin Evening” and “Blok Evening”.
