Together with Ya. M. Sverdlov attended First illegal Social-Democratic circles in Nizhniy Novgorod and Sormovo. 1902 exiled to Yeniseysk Province for organizing Nizhniy Novgorod and Sormovo workers’ May Day demonstration. After 2nd Russian Social-Democratic Workers’ Party Congress joined Bolsheviks.
1904 fled from exile to Geneva. January 1905 sent by Lenin to Moscow, where he prepared December revolt. After suppression of this revolt continued illegal Party work in Moscow.
1908 went to London; 1910 re-entered Russia illegally. Party work in Saratov. Again left Russia and lived in Leipzig.
While in Germany worked for Bolshevik Center. During World War 1 interned in a German concentration camp. After 1917 October Revol returned to Russia.
After conclusion of 1918 Brest-Litovsk Peace Treaty counsellor, Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic Embassy in Berlin. 1918, after returning to Moscow, elected secretary, Moscow Party Committee.
