In 1960 Vladimir Ivanovich Petrov graduated from Novocherkassk Engineering Institute for Land Reclamation.
Vladimir Ivanovich worked as a forester. He was also a researcher at the Achikulak Research Forest-and-Field Experimental Station from 1960 to 1973. Since 1973 - deputy director of Teberdinsk State Natural Biosphere Reserve (to 1976) in the Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region. Since 1976, he is a senior scientific worker, the Head of Laboratory, since 1982 - the Head of the Department of Forest Agrarian Development of the Arid Territories of the All-Russian Research Institute of Agroforestry in Moscow.
