After graduate university until 1917 taught at secondary educational establishments and “popular univs”. From 1920 lecturer, then professor, Leningrad University. 1902 began journalistic work.
1908 published a student work “Literaturnyye debyuty North.A. Nekrasova” (North.A. Nekrasov’s Literary Debuts). Wrote numerous articles, studies, popular works on Nekrasov, et cetera Also books and papers on SaltykovShchedrin, Chcrnyshevskiy, Dobrolyubov, Pisarev, Goncharov and Korolenko.
Sponsored establishment of memorial museums to Nekrasov in Leningrad and Karabikh, Yaroslavl’ Oblast. Wrote one of first textbooks on 20th-Century Russian lit Ocherk istorii noveyshey russkoy literatury (An Outline History of Modem Russian Literature) (1925).
