Until 1905 and in 1906 studied at Historical and Philological Faculty, Saint St. Petersburg University. 1911 graduate Historical and Philological Faculty, Derpt (Tartu) University.
Member. Socialist-Revol Party. 1906 expelled from Saint St. Petersburg University for revol activities and exiled to Olonets Province. 1911-1914 secondary-school teacher in Vilnius.
From 1914 history teacher, Minsk Teachers’ Training Institute. Late July 1920 on behalf of Belorussian Communist organisation signed Constitutional Acting to establish second Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic. Member, Belorussian Military-Rcvol Committee.
Late 1920 - early 1926 Belorussian People's Commissar of Agric, then Belorussian People's Commissar of Education. 1925-1928 simultaneously Presidium chairman, Institute of Belorussian Culture. From late 1928 member and president, Belorussian Academy of Sciences.
Member, Central Committee and Central Committee Bureau, Communist Party (Bolsheviks) Belorussian and member. Belorussian Central Executive Committee. Worked on Belorussian history and history of Belorussian literature
Helped found Belorussian higher educational institutions, the Institute of Belorussian Culture and Belorussian Academy of Sciences. 1929-1931, during the reprisals against Belorussian "National-Democrats” was charged with belonging to the counter-revol Belorussian Liberation League.
