Iz predgovora Koliko se ovaj posao cini lasan toliko je i jos vise sirok i dugacak. Citav covjecij vijek trebao bi jednome bezbriznom covjeku da skupi sve nase narodne pjesme, pripovijetke, pripovijesti, zagonetke, obicaje i rijeci. I kad bi se mislilo na svrsetak, ne bi jos ni cemu tome bilo ni pocetka, ali pocinjac misli: samo neka se pocne, pa ce svagda biti lakse dodati i nastaviti nego li sto iznova poceti i naciniti. Vuk Karadžić was born on November 7, 1787 in the village of Tršić, near Loznica, which was in the Ottoman Empire, to parents Stefan and Jegda (née Zrnić). His family settled from Drobnjaci, and his mother was born in Ozrinići, Nikšić (in present-day Montenegro. ) His family had a low infant survival rate, thus he was named Vuk ('wolf') so that witches and evil spirits would not hurt him.
Karadžić was taught to write and read by Jevta Savić Čotrić. He then continued his education in the Tronoša Monastery in Loznica. After unsuccessful attempts to enroll in the gymnasium at Sremski Karlovci, for which 19-year-old Karadžić was too old, Karadžić left for Petrinja where he spent a few months learning Latin and German.
Karadžić worked as a government clerk during the reign of Prince Miloš Obrenović. It was not until he went to Vienna in 1813, however, that his real career began and his skill in language was first recognized. Here he met the well-known Slovene linguist and compilator of Slavic philologic works, J. B. Kopitar, who perceived Karadžić's knowledge of a vast folklore and his possession of the linguistic qualities necessary for the development of a literary tongue. Under Kopitar's guidance and inspiration, Karadžić undertook to modernize the Serbian alphabet. He invented six characters representing sounds for which the old alphabet had no letters and then discarded 18 characters as unnecessary. The resulting alphabet reflects its language more accurately than any other modern European system of spelling. Meanwhile, bitter opposition had arisen among the Serbian clergy, who saw in these linguistic reforms an attempt to alienate the people from the ancient church language of the Slavs. Political factors also entered into the conservative opposition to Karadžić's reform, and for almost 50 years its use was forbidden by the government. Today, however, this reform provides the foundation for the modern Serbo-Croatian language. Karadžić published collections of folksongs, folktales, and proverbs; prepared a dictionary of the Serbian language and a Serbian grammar; and translated a large portion of the Bible into Serbian. He died on February 7, 1864.
Karadžić was the major reformer of the Serbian language. He deserves to be called the father of the study of Serbian folklore. He was also the author of the first Serbian dictionary in his new reformed language. In addition, he translated the New Testament into the reformed form of the Serbian spelling and language.
