Studied at History and Philology Faculty, Moscow University, then studied history, philology and philosophy in Berlin.
Specialized in Dionysian cult and origins of tragedy. From 1891 for a number of years toured many European countries, visited Palestine and Alexandria and returned occasionally to Russia, but primarily domiciled in Italy. 1903 first poetry printed.
1905 settled in Saint St. Petersburg and became one of the leaders of symbolism. Active in Saint St. Petersburg Religious Philosophy Social and in Ory Publ House. Contributed to journal Zolotoye mno, almanach Severnyye tsvelv and journals Kesy, Apollon, Novyy put', et cetera
Taught on Higher Women's Courses. After 1917 October Revol worked for History of Theater Department, People's Commissariat of Education, Moscow. From 1921 in Baku where he was a professor and for a while rector, Baku University and Azcr Deputy People's Commissar of Education.
Ivanov’s symbolist ideas affected Proletkul’t theoreticians. Shied away from official commissions on Soviet themes and emigrated from Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics. From 1924 lived in Italy and translated Dante.
