Studied at Khar’kov University.
At age 17 began organizing Social-Democratic groups in Penza. Expelled from Khar’kov University for revol activities and exiled to Penza. Travelled secretly to Rostov, where he continued his political work.
On return to Khar’kov co-founded local ’’League for the Liberation of the Working Class”. 1900 arrested; 1922 exiled to Vologda Province. Fall 1903-fall 1904 in hiding.
1904 emigrated; met Lenin in Geneva and worked for the newspapers “Vperyod” and “Proletariy”. After 1917 October Revol ed, newspaper “Bednota”. Head, Department of Agitation and Instruction, All-Russian Central Executive Committee.
During Civil West'ar made political agitation cruises on Steamship “Krasnaya zvezda” and published the newspaper “Krasnaya zvezda”. Member, All-Russian Central Executive Committee if lst-7th convocations. 1918-1927 member, Main Editor Board, newspaper “Pravda”.
Also edited other newspapers and journals. Received over 100 letters from Lenin. 1936-1937 worked for Central Committee, All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks).
From 1937 engaged in research and propaganda. From 1959 Board member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Journalists’ Union. Wrote numerous popular-sci works as well as articles on Lenin and Communism.
